How to Organize Your Tax Documents Before Your Appointment
A little preparation helps your appointment stay focused. Start with the documents you received, then group records by the kind of income, expense, or life event they support.
- Start with last year's return. Use it as a reference for recurring forms, accounts, dependents, and business activity that may need an update.
- Separate income documents. Group W-2s, 1099s, investment statements, retirement information, and business-income records together.
- Group deduction and credit records. Place donation receipts, education records, mortgage information, childcare records, and health-coverage forms in clearly labeled groups.
- Include life changes. Note a move, marriage, divorce, a new dependent, a new business, property activity, or other material changes from the prior year.
- Check for missing forms. If you expect a form but have not received it, make a note instead of guessing the amount.
- Keep originals organized. Store originals safely even after making copies or uploading documents as requested.
- Use the right delivery method. The general contact form is for general questions only. Use the secure document portal when Daye2Daye LLC requests documents.
Do not include Social Security numbers, EINs, tax returns, or other sensitive information in an ordinary email or the general contact form. Bring questions to your appointment if you are unsure which documents apply to you.
